Background of the Study
Antenatal care (ANC) is a crucial component of maternal health services that ensures the well-being of both the mother and the unborn child. Regular ANC visits help in the early detection and management of pregnancy-related complications, thereby reducing maternal and infant mortality rates (WHO, 2024). However, teenage mothers, particularly in developing regions like Benue State, often face challenges in accessing adequate ANC services.
Benue State has a high rate of teenage pregnancies, attributed to early marriages, poverty, and limited access to sexual and reproductive health education. Many teenage mothers encounter socio-economic and cultural barriers that prevent them from seeking timely and adequate ANC services. These barriers include stigma, lack of financial resources, long distances to healthcare facilities, and lack of support from families or partners (UNICEF, 2024).
Additionally, teenage mothers often lack knowledge about the importance of ANC, leading to poor health-seeking behaviors. Some may delay or completely avoid attending ANC clinics due to fear of judgment or discrimination from healthcare providers. This study aims to evaluate the level of access teenage mothers in Benue State have to ANC services, identifying key barriers and proposing solutions to improve maternal healthcare among this vulnerable group.
Statement of the Problem
The high prevalence of teenage pregnancies in Benue State is a pressing public health issue that contributes to poor maternal and infant health outcomes. Teenage mothers are particularly vulnerable to pregnancy complications such as anemia, preterm labor, and high blood pressure due to inadequate ANC visits (ACOG, 2024). Despite efforts to improve maternal healthcare services, many teenage mothers still struggle to access quality ANC, leading to preventable health risks.
A lack of financial independence, fear of societal judgment, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure are some of the major factors that limit teenage mothers’ access to ANC in Benue State. In rural communities, the problem is further exacerbated by long distances to healthcare facilities and cultural practices that discourage young unmarried girls from seeking medical attention during pregnancy.
If teenage mothers do not receive proper ANC, both maternal and infant mortality rates could increase. This study seeks to evaluate the challenges teenage mothers face in accessing ANC services in Benue State and propose solutions to improve healthcare accessibility for this vulnerable group.
Objectives of the Study
To assess teenage mothers' level of access to antenatal care in Benue State.
To identify barriers preventing teenage mothers from utilizing ANC services.
To recommend strategies for improving teenage mothers' access to ANC in Benue State.
Research Questions
What is the level of access teenage mothers have to ANC services in Benue State?
What are the key barriers preventing teenage mothers from seeking ANC?
What strategies can enhance teenage mothers' access to ANC services?
Research Hypotheses
Teenage mothers in Benue State have limited access to ANC services.
Socio-economic and cultural barriers significantly hinder teenage mothers from utilizing ANC.
Improved healthcare infrastructure and awareness programs will increase ANC uptake among teenage mothers.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on teenage mothers in Benue State, examining their access to ANC services and the challenges they encounter. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining reliable data due to cultural stigma and reluctance among young mothers to discuss their experiences.
